ラテン語で patens は、『開出した』という意味。　 In Latin 'patens' means 'opening'.
直立する一年草。雌雄同株。高さ30～60cm。８月から10月に開花。アジア北東部に分布し、国内では南千島、北海道～九州に分布する。海岸の砂地に生育する。
Annual erect herb. monoecious. 30～60cm tall. Flowering from August to October. Distributed in Northeast Asia. In Japan, S. Kuriles, Hokkaido ～ kyushu. Grows at sandy seashores.

ラテン語で tetragonum は、『四角形の』という意味。　 In Latin 'tetragonum' means 'tetragonous'.
しっかりした根を持つ二年草。高さ 20〜60cm。葉は根生し、肉質でへら形。 9月から11月に開花。花冠は漏斗形で、上半分が黄色、下半分が白くなる。日本および韓国中部～南部に分布し、国内では本州中部～西部、四国、九州、奄美大島に分布する。海辺の塩湿地に生育する。
Biennial herbs with a stout straight root. 20～60cm tall. Leaves are radical, fleshy, spatulate. Flowering from September to November. Corolla is funnelform, yellow on upper half, white on lower half. Distributed in Japan and C. to S. Korea. In Japan, C. and W. Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, Amami-oshima. Grows at salt marshes on seasides.
